While he has tried cases in more than 25 states and the District of Columbia, Mr. Lewis is proudest of his extensive record of settling cases and preserving families. He also treasures his continuing opportunity to guide and mold young lawyers and law students; having personally trained and mentored more than one dozen of the lawyers featured in Washingtonian magazine's "Top 50" series. Mr. Lewis is an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University School of Law, having taught courses in trial advocacy and family law. He also serves as Charter Faculty and Director of the Virginia College of Trial Advocacy, located at The College of William and Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law. In 2004, Mr. Lewis became the eighth and youngest recipient of the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section's Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received the George Mason University School of Law's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002. These honors join an extensive list of awards that have recognized Mr. Lewis' skill, creativity, and dedication, including the Virginia Bar Association's Gardener G. DeMallie, Jr. Continuing Legal Education Award (2004); Fairfax County's 20th Annual Human Rights Award; the Virginia State Bar's Award of Merit (1996); and the Virginia State Bar's second Local Bar Leader of the Year Award (1997). The latter three honors recognized Mr. Lewis' transformational tenure as president of the Fairfax Bar Association from 1995 to 1996. In that role, he pioneered initiatives to streamline dockets and ensure quality representation for the least fortunate among us, leading Fairfax County to create cutting-edge systems that are admired and emulated across America. He chaired the first Pro Bono Task force, enlisting eminent domestic relations attorneys and their firms in a major effort to eliminate severe backlogs in family and domestic violence dockets. While serving as Fairfax Bar president, Mr. Lewis also established the Diversity Task Force and Minority Outreach Program. In 1997, the Asian American Bar Association recognized Mr. Lewis' "superlative effort in inspiring and promoting" that organization as its only non-Asian co-founder. A native of New York City, Mr. Lewis received his B.A. cum laude in Political and Public Affairs from the University of Miami in 1973 and his J.D. cum laude from George Mason's School of Law in 1977. He is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. |
