Suzanne Slayden

Suzanne Slayden is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at George Mason University. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS and a PhD in chemistry. She has been a member of the faculty since 1976.

In addition to teaching organic chemistry lecture and laboratory almost continuously while at Mason, she developed and has taught for the last several years Computer Techniques Chemistry which fulfills the information technology requirement in general education for chemistry majors. She authored the General Chemistry Laboratory Manual and the Organic Chemistry Laboratory Manual that are used in the undergraduate laboratories.

Her earlier research interests were in the reactions of organoboranes and she now studies the thermochemistry and energetics of organic and organometallic compounds. She has published more than 30 articles in such diverse publications as the Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Structure, Journal of Chemical Education and Philosophy of Science.

She is currently chair of the Faculty Senate and a faculty senator from the College of Science. Prior to that, she served at various times as chair of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Faculty, chair of the CAS Council and on numerous committees. She is currently a member of the Faculty Handbook Revision Committee.
